"The thing that I like about British music that is different from American music"
I think it’s in a place where it’s being more recognised than it has been in the past. You always had the kind of rock music that made it over into America. But the black music in the UK is getting recognition.
Initially, it began with Soul II Soul, but now with Mica Paris, Omar and so forth, you’re getting quite a few more artists that are going across the water, which is very promising to me. Because the thing that I like about British music that is different from American music. You have this element of West African and Island (Caribbean) music, reggae music and so forth, that you wouldn’t have in American music. That is not part of their primary culture as such, and that extra bit in here is the thing that makes it British.
Although they have the influences of American soul, with that element of reggae music, it gives it that unique kind of British sound. And that’s the thing that develops me, because it allows me to stretch beyond things I would normally do.
