UK rapper Mystro has opened 2010 with one of the best rap tracks - '2009 UK Rap Up', an intelligent and at times humourous round down of events of 2009, and though it's predominantly focused on the British black music scene, it makes connections with other social events. Check out the simple but quite effect video below

2009 was the year British black music went commercial. The top of the singles and album charts were no longer such strange territories. Here are a selection of video interviews with some of the crossover acts of 2009 courtesy of BBC 1Xtra. Enjoy!

We are planning on posting a review of the British black music sector in 2009, and possibly 2008, very soon. In the meantime, it's worth reflecting on one of the Black Music Congress’ last debate at City University London - ‘Thinking Out Of The Box: What We’re Doing To Raise The Game In The Black Music Sector’, which took place on Jan. 19 2008.

Yes, it's that time of the year, i.e. end of the year, when all sorts of polls are published. One of the best ones is definitely Blues & Soul's The 40 Essential DJs Of The Past 40 Years Poll! Blues & Soul (now an online mag) lists the 40 most influential DJs on the British black music scene! Check it out, and you're welcome to leave your comments.

Yes, there ought to be more "good" black artists signed, but the majors who have the money to invest/pay an advance/spend loads on promotion, are mostly only interested in quick selling product. The priority for them therefore, is image – not talent. Another element which exists, but that I don’t wish to overstate is the racial element, coupled with the fact that there are not enough well off black people here investing in quality artists/products.

Karl Hinds has been in the music game for over fifteen years, but this has probably been the longest period of time that people have had to wait for his new material.
The east London native’s last album, ‘Have Patience’ (2004), was in musical terms light years ago. It was evidently prophetic, since that is exactly what people have had to do from the spitter/producer.
